STRIVE MASIYIWA THROWS HAT IN THE RING FOR ZIMBABWE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
Zimbabwe business mogul and Econet wireless boss Strive Masiyiwa has shocked many by declaring he will compete in the forth coming Zimbabwe presidential elections as an independent candidate.
Masiyiwa 56 is currently living in the U.K but has vast businesses across the world. Zimbabwe is expected to hold harmonised elections some time in the first quarters of next year.
The Zimbabwean born businessman, is the cellphone pioneer and founder of Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe which has become a global telecoms provider in several countries mainly Africa having started from humble beginnings in his native Zimbabwe.
Masiyiwa told reporters at his offices in Washington yesterday that high ranking regional and Zimbabwean people had persuaded him to join the race and his sole aim was to rescue Zimbabwe from the current socio and economic impasse. ” I have decided to throw my hat in the ring and i am confident i will garner enough votes to become the next president of Zimbabwe. I will not be forming a political party but will compete as an independent” said an equally confident Masiyiwa.
“I will then form a government of national unity with progress minded individuals across the whole Zimbabwean political divide who do not have a tainted past should I win the elections.” Masiyiwa added.
“Zimbabwe has suffered enough and its time the country goes forward with the abundant resources we have based. If we achieve political stability and put in place sound economic policies, we will become the Jewel of Africa again. In the next few days i will be announcing a team of individuals who will assist me in the election campaign and we have already started preparations on the ground in Zimbabwe” said the equally confident Econet boss.
Asked if he was ready to join forces with other parties or political leaders in his bid to garner maximum support from the masses, Masiyiwa said ” all i can tell you is Zimbabwe needs strong leadership which i believe i can now provide.” Sources closer to Masiiwa also confirmed that the businessman considering joining forces with ‘the on fire’ Phillip Chiyangwa in his political campaign.
Aside from Econet, Strive Masiyiwa is a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation and a board member of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa which is funded by both the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and chaired by Kofi Annan.
With British born Sir Richard Branson, Masiyiwa is a co-founder of the Carbon War Room, a global, independent non-profit established to help entrepreneurs unlock market-driven solutions to climate change.
Beyond telecoms, Strive Masiyiwa’s business activities include operations and investments in some of Africa’s leading businesses in financial services, insurance, renewable energy, bottling for Coca-Cola, hotel and safari lodges. The Econet Group is also exploring several opportunities in targeted African other international emerging markets.
