Nontokozo: Why I became a Human Rights Actvist

Our actions and decisions today will shape the way we will be living in the future.

Fighting for realisation of people’s rights has been a part of my life since my teenage years. Witnessing the slow deterioration of all things ‘decent’ in my country was traumatising. The regime and its judiciary remains corrupt and the law enforcers are even worse.

I have watched the morality of our society crumbling as each day passed. Given the onslaught on the rule of law, I developed a passion to do something, at least speak up against the rot. Those that stand up and speak up against abuses are arbitrarily arrested, unlawfully detained, intimidated and even killed.

Growing up in such a stunted democracy my resolve was well set, I had to be the voice that I am!
